Meet the Artist: Amy Kumar

I love painting landscapes inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest where I live currently. Also enjoy making colorful abstract art and fusion of folk art with modern designs, inspired by Indian culture.

I prefer working with acrylics and watercolor, and love experimenting with different media to bring my artistic vision to life.

Artistic Journey

Born and brought up in Bihar, India, I grew up in an environment that encouraged art and culture as much as it encouraged science and innovation, and for that I am deeply grateful to my parents. My artistic journey began at home with my mother and continued with very inspiring teachers lifelong.

I owe several of my art skills to my first art teacher, Lt. Mrs. Rama Rohatgi, from my alma mater Notre Dame Academy, Patna, under whose guidance I created several artwork in watercolor and participated in art competitions. Was awarded first place in a Red Cross competition by the then Bihar Governor, Dr. A.R. Kidwai at Governor House.

Thereafter, I trained under Arun Awasarmol Sir at Rajhans Vidyalaya, Mumbai who introduced me to a much larger world of art, through tours to Picasso's Metamorphosis, J.J. School of Art and several art competitions, and still continues to be a constant source of inspiration and motivation. The most cherished memory was when my first abstract painting done on a lamp shade got awarded first prize and signed by the esteemed artist of India, Lt. M. F. Hussain.

At Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, where I trained as an Electrical Engineer, my group won the First prize in Installation (3-D creative structure building & painting) in East zone Youth Festival organized by Association of Indian universities-2007. After a few years of working, curiosity to learn more brought me to Iowa, in the midst of USA, and while doing my Masters and Ph. D., I made friends in the Art Department and visited their workshop and art galleries when ever I could. My Painting 'Indian Bride' won second prize, and is displayed at Linguist Center, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, since 2015. Research at Microsoft brought me to Pacific Northwest, and its enchanting beauty inspires me to create more art ever since.

"That one must do some work seriously and must be independent and not merely amuse oneself in life, this our mother (Marie Curie) has told us always, but never that science was the only career worth following."
